Your Callaloo came to us from Frog Song Organic Farm in Hawthorne, FL — less than 100 miles from most of our customers homes.
Just when you think you’ve heard about every veggie out there, a new one find its way into the FPP menu. Callaloo is both the name of a Caribbean dish and an edible dark leafy green similar to spinach or swiss chard and used to make stews and soups. Though this is a popular Caribbean dish, the greens originated in West Africa and has made its way to the United States where it thrives in hot humid weather.
Frog Song has a limited amount of the green so we will mixing it Sweet Potato Greens to create a full bunch. Since it is organic, you may see a few bug holes, as this wet summer has been very difficult. But no worries — your greens will taste the same and you won’t even notice once they are chopped up and cooked!
Try to use your greens within the first few days of delivery for best results. To store your greens, place the dampened leaves in a salad spinner but do not wash until you are ready to use. Prewashing breaks down the leaf and leads to quick deterioration.
There are many recipes out there for Callaloo. In Eastern Caribbean countries recipes generally made with okra. Some will include sweet potatoes and coconut Milk. You can also substitute Callaloo for spinach in your favorite recipes.
