FPP News: Autumn is in the Air

Pumpkins, Grits, Maple Coffee!

Nothing says “Autumn” like pumpkins, grits, and maple coffee! It’s my favorite time of the year. As the cool weather comes in (come on, it’s a little cooler today) the smell of maple and pumpkin come out. The house is already dressed in pine cones and all sorts of pumpkins, squashes, and gourds. Which by the way, are all members of the Cucurbitaceae family — a plant family that contains over 700 species including the very popular zucchini, cucumber, and watermelon.

This week we had the pleasure of meeting up with Mike Bradley of Teagan Farms to receive our first round of freshly milled grits. We’ve been waiting all summer to get our hands on them. If you haven’t tried these grits, you don’t know what you’re missing.

What makes these grits so special? First of all the corn is grown, harvested, and milled with love by Mike and his 9 year old grandson, Teagan (whom the farm is named after). Second, it’s made from an heirloom flint corn dating back in the Bradley family nearly 100 years. Flint corn is known for a grittier, more granular texture. In Italy, it has been the choice polenta corn since the 16th century! Polenta is simple to make, low in fat/calories and nutritious!  Last but not least, the corn is grown pesticide free.
