This Farm Cares — Blue Sky is at it again!

This_Farm_Cares

This Farm Cares is a state program that promotes environmentally sound farming practices, in addition to helping educate our Florida residents on agriculture’s role in protecting our natural resources. 600 farms throughout Florida have qualified to receive the CARES award. We are proud that Blue Sky Farms is one of them! In addition, to adding their “garden” to help “sustain” the livelihood of their workers and connect with local residents, they have proven their hard work and dedication to conserving our natural resources and protecting our environment. Kudos!

Veggie Unearthed: Arugula

Arugula500

Your arugula came to us from Blue Sky Farms of Hastings, FL — less than 100 miles from most of our customers’ homes.

This week’s Veggie Unearthed is also known as “rocket” in Canada, Australia and Britain. Low in calories and rich in potassium and Vitamin C, it originated in the Mediterranean where it is considered an aphrodisiac. At any rate, the 2 calorie count in a half cup serving is pretty exciting. Primarily used as a salad green, it has a strong, rich peppery flavor.

As with all greens, consuming it as soon as possible is recommended. Arugula can be gritty or dirty when it first arrives to your door, so be sure to wash thoroughly before adding to the recipe of your choice. Our favorite way to wash and store is in the lettuce spinner. But if you do not have a lettuce spinner dampen the leaves and set into a glass or plastic container and set into the refrigerator. It is important that the leaves stay “hydrated” to keep fresh but not oversaturated.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!

Returning your produce box clean and undamaged means that we can use it again and again. This keeps costs down, minimizes landfill waste and keeps your carbon footprint smaller. Boxes that aren’t returned will incur a $5.00 replacement fee, so be sure to put it out for pickup!
