Ginger Unearthed!

We have a special treat in our local box this week — Ginger! Grown by Sunsplash Farms of New Smyrna, the ginger is grown within 100 miles of most our customers’ homes. Indigenous to southern China, the plant spread to other parts of Asia and then to West Africa and the Caribbean. Ginger is a very pretty flowering plant. However, the root itself is used as a spice in many cultures and is well know for its medicinal properties to help nausea and calm upset stomachs.

Everyone has their own way of storing ginger, but we are partial to peeling, cutting into workable sizes, and freezing. To reduce the chance of freezer burn, cover with plastic wrap and use good quality freezer bags. This method is perfect for keeping ginger longer, especially if you only cook with fresh ginger occasionally. In addition, it makes grating ginger much easier!

In the past, our customers have given rave reviews of the Sunsplash ginger, saying the flavor and texture far exceed the ginger bought at the grocery store. Due to its very short farm-to-table timeframe, freshly picked ginger tends to be less fibrous and more vibrant in flavor. Use it in your daily smoothies, stir fries, and to spice up poultry, pork, or beef. Below are recipe ideas:

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!

Returning your produce box clean and undamaged means that we can use it again and again. This keeps costs down, minimizes landfill waste and keeps your carbon footprint smaller. Boxes that aren’t returned will incur a $5.00 replacement fee, so be sure to put it out for pickup!
