It’s Easy Bein’ Green!

You may notice a trend this week… green, green, green! Green peppers, green onions, zucchini, basil, kale and watermelon make for one very green bin! One of the great perks of living in such a tropical area is an abundance of spring/summer greenery. Though the kids are out of school and temperatures are easily topping 90, summer doesn’t technically start until June 20th so we’ll be enjoying these warm temperatures for many months to come.
In order to keep that green coming we’ll be transitioning to our summer regional bin structure over the next few weeks. We’ll extend our sourcing area to within 400 miles of Jacksonville for only these warmest weeks, then return to our local-only sourcing when we start to cool down. As always, our emphasis will remain on supporting the closest possible farmers and encouraging organic production with the lowest possible food miles. However, when nature turns up the heat, to supply you year-round we’ll be extending our reach to bring you the “greenest” greens possible!

It pays to keep an eye on our Facebook page! We are beginning to offer not only specials like this one, but also opportunities to pick up extra bins and items at our location on S. Our communication of these time-sensitive deals is most often done through Facebook, so be sure to “like” us today!

Veggie Bin Block Party!

Late spring and early summer always bring neighborhood parties, picnics and barbecues. In the spirit of community, from now until the end of June, we’ll be rewarding you for sharing The Veggie Bin with your neighbors! Simply share your Veggie Bin experience with your favorite neighbors then have them list you as their referral when they sign up. Neighbors within a half mile of your home (according to Google Maps) will qualify you for a $10 direct credit to your Veggie Bin account up to a maximum of five. You’ll also be contributing to our sense of community as well as keeping our carbon footprint low as we continue to grow.

This Week’s Veggie Unearthed: Sungold Tomatoes

Your Sungold tomatoes came to us from The Family Garden in Bell, Florida – less than 100 miles from most of our customers’ homes.

These astonishingly sweet, yellow-gold cherry tomatoes are difficult to keep around! Our emphasis is always on experimentation and quality for the home cook, but these little guys might not even make it into a pan once you’ve tasted them. Sweet as candy, they make a great addition to any salad or raw preparation, or they can be used as you would any cherry tomato of exceptional flavor.

If your Sungolds should manage to survive the night without being raided by your spouse or other home-dwelling predators, please do not store them in your refrigerator. Refrigeration will rob them of their flavor! Your Sungolds are only briefly chilled after bin assembly to prevent spoilage of other items in the bin. Store them for 2-4 days out of direct sunlight at room temperature below 80 degrees for best flavor. Or, you could just eat them all before anyone sees them and say, “What tomatoes?” Don’t dribble on your shirt though. That gives you away.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!

Returning your bin clean and undamaged means that we can use it again and again. This keeps costs down, minimizes landfill waste and keeps your carbon footprint smaller. Bins that aren’t returned will incur a replacement fee, so be sure to put it out for pickup!
